We have created the Spotfire Starter Template to allow you to directly fetch your data from Riffyn into Spotfire, and create dashboards. You can also use the template as a starting point to customize the integration with Riffyn SDE (by modifying the underlying code, which we provide open source under MIT License to do with as you please).
Data tables from Riffyn can be easily imported into Spotfire Analyst within template (DXP) files.
How to start a Spotfire visualization
1. Download the current version of the Riffyn Spotfire Starter Template
The most current version of the Riffyn Spotfire Starter Template can be found at here. Spotfire, by default, requires a data table in order to start a new template file. The Riffyn.xlsx is a simple data file associated with the Starter Template.
2. Open the Starter Template (DXP) file in Spotfire Analyst on your desktop and fill out the user form.
The Starter template consists of a single Page containing a user input form. Upon opening the file, Spotfire will look for the Riffyn.xlsx file as its primary data source. If it is not able to find it in the same directory as the template file, it will ask if you want to search or browse for it.
You may receive a prompt titled "Not Trusted Scripts". Click "Yes" to review each of the embedded scripts and select "Trust All" from the menu to accept them (Selecting "No" above or not trusting the scripts will prevent the data import from Riffyn from occuring).
When fully opened, a single page titled "Riffyn - Load" should be shown and the "Load Riffyn Data" button should be visible (not deactivated).
When loaded, the user input form is the only contents within Riffyn Spotfire Starter Template
3. Import your Data Tables
Fill out the user form with your Riffyn Virtual Private Cloud address, user credentials, and references to data you’d like to import.
NOTE: Currently Spotfire Analyst does not offer a Password field that obscures passwords on screen, so be careful about where you are when typing your password (i.e. make sure no one can see your monitor). After loading your data from Riffyn, the Password field will be replaced with "******" (which is the best we can do given Spotfire's limitations).
Re-loading the files will require you to re-enter your password.
Riffyn data loaded as a data table in Spotfire
There are many formats you can use to import multiple Experiment results:
1) Experiment ID: Enter one or more Experiment IDs separated by a semicolon “;”
Example: Lc8AnQiZ2L3Hvsy3Q; m3oCXJ5pc9SJfYkt9;
2) Process ID: Enter a process ID to get all of the associated Experiments.
3) Process ID and Range of Experiment numbers:
Example: fWzKizgdxu4SdWbib: [6, 9-11]; Lc8AnQiZ2L3Hvsy3Q
NOTE: Only pre-exported data sets can be imported into Riffyn. You can tell if your Experiment has been exported if it shows one of the download Icons in the upper right of your Riffyn experiment page:
If you don't see such an icon there (e.g., you see a red-outline icon indicating stale data), just click the icon to refresh the data. Then you'll be set to continue.
Now you can click the “Load Riffyn Data” button in the Spotfire template page. This triggers an IronPython script that retrieves the indicated data from Riffyn and creates new data tables for them within Spotfire. These data tables can be updated by re-entering the experiment Ids and clicking the “Load Riffyn Data” button. The requisite data tables will be updated with the most recent data from Riffyn.
4. Create your own visualizations
Once your data is in Spotfire Data Tables, you can use them anywhere in the Spotfire file. You can create visualizations, tables, or the like within Spotfire as needed. You can also join or append data tables using the built-in features.
We strive to make sure you have access to your Riffyn data from your favorite analysis and visualization tools. We’ll be expanding the capabilities of the Riffyn Spotfire Starter Template to enable greater functionality. Updates will be posted on the download page.
