Design is where you define the structure of your process and experimental design. A process consists of a series of steps (or groups of steps), with each step having inputs and outputs . The outputs of one step can linked to the input of an succeeding step, thereby creating a structured flow of material between steps.

Each step in a process represents a transformation/movement/use of materials and/or equipment.
